- Mum of two and grandmother of eight, I have been researching my own family history for over 40 years. Other family members have asked me for help with their research and naturally I have oblidged. It is the thrill of the chase that keeps me going in my genie research. Nothing is more satisfying than finding a missing link. Except perhaps completing something that I have been creating. I'm also into things creative - I knit, I crochet and I sew.. and now I'm learning to spin as well. With all these grandkids, I spend time amusing them or sewing for them and making them toys and teddy bears as well. Their smiles and squeals of delight make it all worth while. Richard Saunders married Caroline Sparshott (daughter of Frederick & Sarah Sparshott)on 24 December 1862 in Adelaide, SA. She was born in Thebarton, SA on 27 July 1843. Her parents arrived in SA prior to the 1841 Census of South Australia, but I have not investigated their arrival date as yet. Richard & Caroline had 9 children - Frederick William 1864, Annie Amelia 1865-1954, Albert Richard 1867-1922, Lily 1870, Florence Charlotte 1873, Randolph Ernest 1874-1946, Maud Hart 1876, Edgar Harving 1878-1963, and Garnet Hornby 1880. Questions over how and when surname changed. Arrived in South Australia on the ship Lysander on 06/07/1839 had left from Liverpool, England with her husband George Illman 18/03/1839.

My grandfather was Garnet Hornby Saunders, son of Richard Saunders and Caroline Charlotte Sparshot He was born in 1880 and came to NZ in 1902.
He became well known in NZ as a businessman and also featured in the Cairns and Townsville media This can be found in Trove. Garnet featured in the NZ Dictionery of Biography
