CLIFFORD

Matthew Clifford born 1819 Cricklade, Wiltshire, ENG and baptised 6 Aug 1819 at Highway near Calne, Wiltshire, ENG married in June 1843 at Cricklade, Wiltshire to Anne Franklin. Anne was born in 1818 and baptised at All Cannings, Wiltshire on 29 Sept 1822, the daughter of George Franklin & Sarah Hamlyn. Matthew's parents were William Clifford & Deborah Williams. Matthew & Anne migrated to South Australia in 1850 aboard Lysander. Their embarkation order states "Matthew Clifford, his wife & 2 children have gone to friends" - I have no idea who the friends were.

A sister of Matthew's - Tryphenia Clifford married George Beer and also migrated, but was already in South Australia when Matthew & Anne arrived - perhaps they were the friends referred to on Matthew's embarkation order.

The family lived at Langhorne Creek and Mt Barker, and after Matthew's death, Anne moved to Hatherleigh in the south east of the state to her son Thomas's home. Matthew died on 22 August 1863 at Mt Barker and was buried at Langhorne Creek. Anne died on 20 September 1906 at Hatherleigh and was buried at Penola cemetery.

LIDDELL & LAKE families

Seeking descendants of Anthony James LIDDELL born c 1835 Durham, ENG died 1931 Leabrook, SA; married 1858 North Adelaide to Sarah Anne Trehane LAKE born 1835 died 1895 North Adelaide, daughter of Henry Lake and Anne Trehane.

Children that I know of:-

Sarah Lavinia Lake Liddell 1859-1920 married Frederick William Hocart
Margaret Florence Lake Liddell 1864-1867
William Anthony Theodore Liddell 1867-1905 married Mary Elizabeth Tubb
Florence Emily Maude Liddell 1869-? married Charles Allen
Charles Frederick James Liddell 1871-1943 married Sarah Loftes Hamlin
Anthony George Liddell 1873-1930 married Dora Eilza Wilson

We believe that Anthony James Liddell was the son of Thomas Liddell and Mary Brenan. And that he was the grandson or great grandson of James Liddell of Gateshead, Durham, ENG in which case he may be related to the Baron of Ravensworth.

STEIN family

Descendants of Hans Heinrich Stein and Catharina Dorothea Henrika Reimers are also sought.

Hans Heinrich was born in 1813 Oldeloe, Schleswig-Holstein, Prussia and Catharina Reimers was born in 1824 Teltow, Mecklenberg, Germany. They both arrived in 1849 and I suspect that Hans Heinrich was engaged to Catharina prior to migration for two reasons - 1) he came as Hans Heinrich Reimers and 2) they married shortly after arrival in Adelaide.

They had five children:-

Carl Gustave Johann Stein 1849-1850
Cartharina Dorothea Wilhelmine Stein 1851-? married Johann Wilhelm Jacobsen
Anna Catharina Maria Stein 1853-1926 married Carl Ernest Albert Gehrike
Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Stein 1854-?
Dietrich Adolph Stein 1856-1934 married Josepha Maria Braendler

I have been told that Hans Heinrich was the son of Jurgen Steen and Catharina Magdalina Hartz but have not been able to confirm this. Looking for descendants and ancestors.

SIMPSON Family

My 3x great grandfather Walter Simpson was born in Battersea, London, ENG in July 1801 to Walter Simpson and his wife Sarah. He was apprenticed as a boat builder as a teenager and in 1818 along with a chap named William Burne stole 6 loaves of bread in a basket from a man named James Unwin. For their efforts, both men received 7 year transportation sentences to Van Diemen's Land.

Walter spent a short time in the hulks in England before being transported on the ship Surrey with 159 other poor unfortunate souls. He arrived in Van Dieman's Land in 1819. During the first 12 months of his time, he received several punishments, then in 1821 he was among the first to be sent to Sarah Island where he remained until he got his freedom certificate in 1825.

He then returned to Hobart where we believe he worked as a carpenter among other things. For the next three years he behaved himself to some degree, but in 1828 he was again in trouble with the law for supposedly harbouring an escaped female prisoner. In 1829 he stole some waistcoats belonging to the Solomon brothers and was tried at the Oatlands court and sentenced to 3 months hard labour - during which time he was shackled to another man and made to build the new Oatlands Courthouse.

In 1830 he stole a bundle of laths from a Hobart gent and was tried and convicted and sentenced to another 7 years - most of this was served at hard labour in and around Hobart, but after an incident recorded as "misconduct on Sunday afternoon" in 1832 he was sent to Pt Arthur.

In October 1834 he applied to marry a woman named Mary Ann Johnson but permission was refused. In 1836 he received his second certificate of freedom and in the muster of 1837 he is recorded living in New Town with his "wife" Mary Ann and a daughter named Mary Ann.

Children were born to Walter & Mary Ann between 1837 and 1841 and in 1843 there is a marriage record for Walter Simpson & Mary Ann Scammell. One more child was born in Hobart before the family moved to South Australia where several more children were born.

When Walter arrived in SA he had plenty of money - where a 14 year convict without much paid work between came by enough to purchase all the land he owned in SA is a mystery.

Walter's children were:-
Mary Ann born 1837 married Joseph Barclay Berry
Sarah Jane born 1839 married James Berry
Walter born 1841 died 1848
Rebecca born 1844 married Johann Gottfried Thiele
Susanna born 1847
Un=named son still born in 1850
William born 1851 died 1903
Fanny born 1854 married 1) Charles Abercromie Dignum Sigmont 2) Henry Hove Splaine
Emily born 1857 married Charles William Brown
Ellen born 1859 married Richard Luke Peters
Alice born 1860 died 1860
Walter born 1861 married 1) Margaret Amelia Byrne 2) Agnes Bonney

SCAMMELL family

My 3xgreat grandmother was Mary Ann Scammell born 1818 in Clerkenwell, London, ENG to William Scammell and Ann Sedgwick. At some point prior to 1837 she turned up in Hobart, Van Dieman's Land, AUS where she later married my 3x great grandfather Walter Simpson.

William Scammell, her father was a silversmith or silver chaser born in 1792 in London to Joseph Scammell and Mary Ellewell. He was made a freeman of the Goldsmiths Company in 1813 after serving his apprenticeship. William & Ann Scammell had five children - Mary Ann, Eliza Sarah, Emma, William Sedgwick and Fanny. I know nothing of my 3xgreat grandmother's siblings.

Joseph Scammell, father of William, was a silversmith born 1752 in Tetbury, Gloucestershire. He married Mary Ellewell in 1778 at St Alphgate, London Wall, ENG. They had only two sons -Joseph and William. The son Joseph was also a silversmith. Joseph the father, was the son of John Scammell and Mary Comport.

I would be interested in contact from anyone who thinks they may know anything about these families.
